Thestrals are fearsome winged horses visible to anyone who’s witnessed death. Players can capture these Hogwarts Legacy beasts at two Thestral Dens.
Among the fantastic beasts players can rescue in Hogwarts Legacy is the Thestral: a fearsome winged horse only visible to those who’ve witnessed death. Despite their spooky appearance and reputation for being bad omens, Thestrals are intelligent, loyal creatures and among the rarest beasts players can catch in Hogwarts Legacy.
Players who own the Deluxe Edition will eventually unlock a rare Thestral flying mount in Hogwarts Legacy named Sepulchria that they can also add to their vivariums in the Room of Requirement. Like Unicorns, which players can only find in one specific creature den, Thestrals can only be found and caught at two creature dens in Hogwarts Legacy’s open world. Luckily, one of these dens is located relatively close to Hogwarts.
Thestrals Locations In Hogwarts Legacy

The most convenient location for players to find Thestrals is in the North Ford Bog north of Hogwarts Castle. There are quite a few Merlin Trials in the North Ford Bog, and players may have already visited this creature den if they’ve learned how to breed beasts by helping Deek, the house elf in The Foal of the Dead quest. Alternatively, there is another Thestral den far to the south, on the eastern shores of Marunweem Lake. Players can find and capture Thestrals at both locations.
To successfully capture a Thestral, players should use the Disillusionment Charm, which allows them to get close to a herd without startling the Thestrals. Without stealth, most beasts will be able to escape before players can use the Nab-Sack to capture them. Then, using some spells such as Arresto Momentum, Glacius, and Leviosoplayers can immobilize a Thestral and use the Nab-Sack.
Players must press the capture button five times to catch a Thestral, but they can always stop to cast any immobilizing spells again.
After catching a Thestral, players can release it into their Room of Requirement vivariums, where it produces Thestral Hair when fed and brushed. Thestral Hair is a rare resource used for certain gear upgrades in Hogwarts Legacywhich gives players even more incentive to find and catch these spooky yet oddly beautiful creatures.
