Here’s where to find and beat every Merlin trial in the South Hogwarts Region of Hogwarts Legacy, with detailed screenshots, maps, and spells!
The South Hogwarts Region of Hogwarts Legacy is the single largest region in the game. It includes most of Hogwarts Castle and the surrounding area. Of note, there are no Merlin trials within Hogwarts Castle or within Hogsmeade Village. There are Floo Powder markers along the way, but the best way to find and complete the Merlin Trials will be with a Mount, such as a Broom.
Players should expect to need to use the following spells:

Hogwarts Legacy Merlin Trial Locations: South Hogwarts Region
There are 95 Merlin Trials on Hogwarts Legacy‘s map, which begins with the quest, Trials of Merlin. The quest can be started after Natti meets the player by the Groundskeeper’s Hut. There are 13 Merlin Trials in the South Hogwarts Region in Hogwarts Legacy. This guide features detailed screenshots showing the locations of all Merlin Trials within South Hogwartsincluding which spells to use to solve them, along with screenshots of the area and the map to find them. Remember that activating each trial will require a Mallowsweetof which the seeds can be purchased from The Magic Neep in Hogsmeade.
The numbering on the left continues from the first article located in the Northern Regions (#1-17).
18. South Hogwarts #1
This is the very first trial the player will need to complete within the side quest, Trials of Merlin. Nora Treadmill will guide the player through this quest, but players need the Confringo spell in Hogwarts Legacy to light the cauldrons.
19. South Hogwarts #2
This one is very close to the lower half of Hogsmeade. It is a nine-pillar puzzle. There are nine stones on top of the pillars to hit with this one. Use Confringo or a Force spell to destroy them.
20. South Hogwarts #3
This puzzle is a ‘light the cauldron’ trial. Players will need to use Confringo to light all three cauldrons. The pillars are within sight of the activation point. Hit the tallest one first and go in descending order from there.
21. South Hogwarts #4
This is a moth puzzle. Use Lumos to attract the moths and lead them to the three cubes. Once all three are in the cubes, the puzzle will be completed.
22. South Hogwarts #5
This is a trial where the player has to get the ball into a stone depression. Like many puzzles in Hogwarts Legacyunlocking the right spell is key for this puzzle. Travel uphill to find the stone ball. Using Wingardium Leviosa to carry the ball to the depression is the easiest way to solve this Merlin puzzle.
23. South Hogwarts #6
For this one, the player will have to drag five small stones using Wingardium Leviosa onto a platform with four depressions. The stones will all come together, so it’s just a matter of guiding one. There are three total platforms and groups of stones. Use Revelio to spot their location if it isn’t immediately apparent.
24. South Hogwarts #7
Right below the previous puzzle, this trial is a moth puzzle. All the cubes are below the player from the activation point, and all but one of the sets of moths are down there as well. Use Lumos to guide the moths as before.
25. South Hogwarts #8
As with many collectibles in Hogwarts Legacythey are often right next to each other. This puzzle is another stone depression puzzle, and the stone is right next to one of the cubes for the previous puzzle. Use Wingardium Leviosa to maneuver the ball into the depression.
26. South Hogwarts #9
This is also a stone depression puzzle. The depression is below the player on the beach next to the lake. Again, use Wingardium Leviosa to move the ball to get it into place.
27. South Hogwarts #10
For this puzzle, simply destroy the five surrounding standing stones. Confringo or another Force spell should do the trick.
28. South Hogwarts #11
This is a moth puzzle as well; however, one of the cubes will require climbing. Bring the moths to the cliff, where the player will climb, and reactivate Lumos to attract the moths to the cube.
29. South Hogwarts #12
With this region nearly complete in Hogwarts Legacythere are only two more trials. Another stone depression and a ball puzzle. This puzzle has a ball that is above the player on top of a hill, and the stone depression is off the back of that hill straight down. Use Wingardium Leviosa to walk the ball to the depression.
30. South Hogwarts #13
This Merlin puzzle is a fairly straightforward platforming puzzle. Players simply need to get on the shortest platform and jump across.
